Williams began his career 1998 in the youth system of Karlsruher SC and then played from July 2004 in the SC Freiburg youth and reserve system.[4]
He made his debut for the first team of SC Freiburg on 22 January 2010 against Stuttgart.[3][5][6]
As a youth, Williams played for the Germany under-15 team.[3] However, due to FIFA regulations concerning dual citizenship, if the opportunity were to arise, he would be eligible to play at the senior level for either Germany or the United States. He has been called up for two friendlies in October for the United States. Williams made his first appearance for the USA on October 8, 2011 against Honduras; the US won 1-0.
Williams is the son of an American father and German mother who met and married while his father was serving in the United States military and was based in Heidelberg.[3] Williams is a citizen of both Germany and the United States. On September 30, 2011 Williams obtained an American passport, making him eligible to play for the United States national team.
